At NAMM 2018, Harman Professional presented the brand new AKG C636 master reference handheld vocal condenser microphone. Available now worldwide, the microphone builds on of the C535’s sound quality with improved reliability and performance. With a custom-tuned capsule, the C636 is made to capture a vocal performance in all its nuances while rejecting feedback, handling noise, and pops. The C636 features a double-shock suspension system with a rubber bearing and adjustable balancing network.

The former reduces handling and structure-based noise, while the latter cancels vibrations over a wide frequency range. AKG also added a “substantial” brass layer under the capsule to serve as counterweight. AKG says the C636 virtually eliminates feedback with its combination of uniform cardioid polar pattern and specially designed suspension & grille for the capsule. This avoids capturing unwanted reflections from the back of the capsule, a common problem with live mics.

AKG designed a triple-layer anti-plosive system which consists of a grille, foam layer, and a magnetically attached, computer-modelled mesh on top of the capsule. According to AKG, this system can’t be found in another mic near this price range.

All in all, sounds like a very promising microphone that will probably earn its place in the handheld condenser hall of fame. Onto the price and availability information now!
