Laney Supertop: Hot New Foundry Series 120-Watt Head
The Laney Supertop is a new feature-packed 120-watt analogue amp head
The Laney Supertop is a new 120-watt, twin-channel amp head packed with features and launches with matching 2×12 and 4×12 cabinets. It is part of their Foundry Series and packed with great British amp tones.
Laney Supertop
The Laney Supertop is part of the Foundry Series and comes with their LAIR IR (Laney Advance Impulse Response) technology and also features built-in effects.
Making this 120-watt amp an all-analogue head, a super-flexible rig for your guitar setup. They are also releasing tailor-made LF212 2×12 and LF412 4×12 matching cabinets. The cabinets are loaded with HH Acoustics 12″ speakers as standard.
This two-channel amp head has a shared 3-band EQ, but packs in some more features to make it even more flexible. The setup also features a Global Tone control, and this lets you fine-tune your overall electric guitar sound after the EQ.
Finally, for tone-shaping, it has a Bright/Dark switch that is useful for quickly adjusting your sound when switching between guitars with humbuckers (often brighter) and those with single-coils (often darker).
Boost
One of the coolest features is the footswitchable boost, easily adjusted with its distinctive red chickenhead dial. This boost effectively transforms the amplifier into a three-channel amp. You get a dedicated channel for your clean tones, another for overdrive, and then, by activating the boost, you essentially have a lead channel at your disposal.
LAIR: Laney Advance Impulse Response
A sliding switch on the back of the amp head lets you choose between two of Laney’s cabinet captures: the GS112 1×12 and the GS412 4×12.
Outputs
For recording or live sound, there’s an XLR output to send your signal directly to a mixing desk or digital audio workstation (DAW).
Then, for silent practice, a mini-jack headphone output is also included.
Built-in Custom Effects
There are some useful built-in effects. These include Vintage-voiced tremolo, which adds a classic pulsating modulation to your sound. Spiral Chorus and Modulation, which is inspired by Laney’s Black Country Customs Spiral Array chorus pedal.
Plus, the Reverb, which is derived from the Black Country Customs Secret Path Spring Reverb pedal, provides rich, authentic spring reverb sounds.
It also has an effects loop for integrating your external pedals, an aux-in for playing along with backing tracks, and a dedicated input for a footswitch to toggle the built-in reverb on and off.
Verdict
This latest Foundry Series model packs in a lot of great features and could be perfect for a lot of guitarists. Having the LAIR at your disposal is very useful, and all those built-in effects are going to help make it more versatile. Plus, the footswitchable boost expands it beyond a simple two-channel amp head.

One response to “Laney Supertop: Hot New Foundry Series 120-Watt Head”
Interesting, that Laney would release a 120W valve amp, like if we were in the 70ies. The trend seems to go towards silent stages and modellers (not that I’m happy about this, I like my real amps), so releasing a dinosaur of an amp seems quite risky.
Unless of course, the trend has reversed, and us guitarists are starting to remember the beauty of a real amp.
Remains to be seen, if this amp will be a success or not.
