Kilohearts has released the latest part of their “snapin” ecosystem called Phase Plant. It’s a hybrid synthesizer that fits with the Kilohearts Toolbox to expand upon the modular nature of the system.

What are Snapins?

Snapins is an effect chaining plug-in that let you snap-in various effects and modulation modules to create custom plug-ins that run as VST/AU plug-ins in your DAW. Phase Plant takes that idea and adds in synthesis and sampling modules to create a huge hybrid synthesizer.

Phase Plant

It starts with a blank page that you can fill with generators and modulators, effects and processors creating complex sounds, routings and endless possibilities. Anything from simple waveforms to FM and cross modulation can be snapped into place pretty quickly and easily. If starting from scratch seems a bit daunting then it ships with loads of presets for you to explore.

Otherwise, you have analog oscillators, wavetable oscillators, samplers, noise generation, FM, phase modulation and ring modulation all being the basis of your patch, chained together in any order in the section on the left. There’s a complete wavetable editor allowing you to draw your own wavetables. Then you can start snapping in LFOs and envelopes into anything you want with smooth waves or complete randomisation in the section along the bottom. The right-hand side is for snapping in the addition “snapin” effects. These include filters, delays, reverbs, EQ and all sorts of extras that you purchase for the system. It’s like having a plug-in hosting plug-ins. All these things come together in creating hugely versatile synthesized sounds.

Phase Plant is being sold along with their Toolbox bundle. For €169 you get the Toolbox Free with it, which doesn’t seem like much of a deal and it doesn’t even include a filter. The €199 Toolbox Starter bundle is a bit more like it with 11 snapin effects including a filter. It then goes up from there, but really the €199 is the place to start.

Phase Plant has the potential to be a massively interesting synthesizer creating a huge variety of sounds while having the room to expand within itself and have it all saved as a single patch.
