Kali Audio has reworked the technology of its coaxial IN-series monitors into the IN-UNF, an ultra-nearfield desktop monitoring solution for music production, multimedia, and gaming. Let’s take a look at the Kali Audio IN-UNF system and see what it has to offer.

Kali Audio is certainly one of the most successful new manufacturers of studio monitors, and the IN series is especially popular. The new Kali Audio IN-UNF builds on some of the same tech like coaxial mid and high frequency drivers, but in a compact 3-part system made to sit on your desk.

The Kali Audio IN-UNF is designed for ultra-nearfield monitoring, with the speakers at about an arm’s length from your ears. That’s perfect for multimedia applications and gaming, but also for many home studios. Kali Audio says that the desk becomes an acoustic component and that the system takes the reflections from the desk into account, yielding a transparent mix that translates well.

IN-UNF consists of three components. In addition to a 320W Class-D amplifier, the main unit houses two high-excursion 4.5” woofers. You can use it horizontally (e.g. underneath your monitor) or vertically. According to Kali Audio, the horizontally-opposed placement of the woofers prevents the transfer of vibrations to your desk.

Versatile connectivity

The connectors on the sides of the bass unit provide maximum versatility for a variety of applications. In addition to balanced TRS inputs and a 1/8” stereo line input, IN-UNF also offers an optical input, as well as a USB-C port that’s compatible with computers and mobile devices. This means that you can connect your iOS device or gaming console just as easily as the outputs of your mixer or audio interface.

The two satellites use the same coaxial midrange drivers and tweeters as the IN-5 and IN-8 studio monitors. The spherical speakers sit on silicone pads that let you adjust the angle, so they always point directly at your ears.

All in all, the Kali Audio IN-UNF looks like an interesting option for anyone running a small desktop studio, multimedia setup, or gaming rig. Personally, I’m not too sure about the looks of the bass unit, but if the system delivers the same audio quality as the IN series, it’s certainly a neat all-in-one solution for any small monitoring application.

Price and availability

The Kali Audio IN-UNF system will be available shortly for €649 (MSRP).

I recently bought the Kali IN-5 v2 monitors. I think they sound great and translate well. They are also hiss-free, very quiet monitors. This set-up looks perfect for a desktop arrangement. I have a feeling these will sound excellent.
