J Rockett is gearing up to release a second signature overdrive pedal with a built-in EQ section. The new pedal is produced in association with the fast-fingered Mark Lettieri of Snarky Puppy.
Mark Lettieri has chosen to combine two great-sounding pedals into one compact unit for his signature overdrive pedal. The unit seems pretty simple to use, with two controls for the overdrive (Gain + Volume) and instead of the usual Tone or Tone Stacks, there is a pretty lush 6-band EQ on top. Each band – 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 and 3200 Hz – can be raised or lowered by 18 dB.
Sonically, it’s a mix of three well-known pedals: The Dude and Blue Note provide the basic character. Think Tube Screamer meets Dumble amp. All this takes then gets a glaze of The Majestic ’70s Rock tone over the top. The Melody Overdrive is what you get when you throw in that really handy 6-band EQ section on top.
It should easily handle smooth jazz runs while also catering for ‘rockier’ moments, making for a pretty versatile medium-gain overdrive pedal for players that want something smooth. Being true bypass, it won’t mess with your tone when not engaged. Do have a look at the video in which Mark Littieri shows that he knows how to move his fingers around the fretboard, and makes the pedal sound pretty sublime with his effortless playing style.
Considering that J Rockett Audio did such a great job with their Steve Stevens Rockaway Archer pedal, you can see why Mark opted for them to make his signature overdrive pedal. The company already makes some pretty great boutique overdrive pedals, so all you have to do is decide which one is best for you – good luck with that decision!
