After announcing the demise of the original Montage back in July of this year, Yamaha tease its supposed replacement with new images & audio!

When Yamaha announced that it was discontinuing the Montage back in July, the news was met with some nodding heads and chin rubbing. Montage has been a hugely successful platform for the Hamamatsu legends. Moving away from the more traditional workstation, Montage is a premium quality workhorse. Packed with their stunning AWM2 sounds and the new FM-X engine, it adds everything the performing keyboard player could want. The Superknob is a stroke of genius!

AN-X

You may also remember that we reported on the trademark registration of ‘AN-X’. Much speculation has grown around this term. The smart money seems to be a resurrection of Yamaha’s excellent AN analog modelling engine. This was used to great effect in the classic AN1x. It also featured as a plug-in card on the CS6x, EX5 and others. The AN200 groovebox also benefitted from it. Pairing the AN-X engine with FM-X and AWM2 would deliver a powerful sonic palette.

New Yamaha Montage

Well, the launch cycle began in earnest today. Yamaha has released a series of images and a good number of audio demos. This follows in the wake of a small leak last month. This leak revealed a second display to the left of the main touch screen. It also confirmed that the Superknob is here to stay. And there are a good amount of interesting knobs, buttons and switches in the UI. And the leak also seemed to confirm the name. Yup, it’s still Montage, but Montage M. The range looks like shaping up to be the Montage M6, M7 and M8x. Nobody is quite sure what the ‘x’ stands for though!

Mmmm… Montage M

Today’s images confirm these, albeit in a coy sort of way. Take a look…

And then there’s the audio demos. Some of these sound spectacular and certainly add weight to the AN-X theory.

It’s not easy to deduce what the new Montage will have under the hood. It is safe to assume that it will be deep and exquisite. Yamaha are legendary for quality and they will be sparing no expense on their flagship instrument. All we can say is ‘watch this space’. Maybe Yamaha will debut the new Montage M at Synthfest U.K. on October 7th in Sheffield? It would coincide with their planned release slot.

Can’t wait until then for a new workstation keyboard, well then we have a few alternatives available to buy right now…

This one is a another scam of people for money.

The article mentioned “Yamaha’s legendary quality?” The quality is no longer the same, today only Yamaha keys remain an element that I cannot criticize. Everything else can be criticized endlessly. I have a real AH1x, with a modified output, and a 2016 Montage, in which I also modified the outputs and input to maximum sound quality. Others will buy a new useless Yamaha synthesizer, I won’t be among these people!
