HUM Audio RP-2: 2-channel boutique analog preamp with remote
Poland-based manufacturer HUM Audio unveiled the new RP-2 analog mic preamp. The hand-assembled unit offers a transformer-balanced design with fully discrete Class-A circuitry. It also connects to a dedicated remote controller over XLR. Here’s more about the RP-2 dual-channel mic preamp…
HUM Audio RP-2
The HUM Audio Devices RP-2 is transformer-balanced, fully discrete, Class-A dual channel microphone preamp with remote controller. The connection between the preamp (built into a box-style chassis) and the controller (included) uses a male to male XLR cable.
The idea behind the pre + remote design is to shorten the distance between the mics and the preamp in your studio, which will prevent signal loss from longer mic cable runs. That, and there are the ergonomics of comfortably controlling the main preamp settings from the remote.
An interesting approach to the gain circuit is the use of photo cells to control signal levels. The circuitry employs Jensen JE990 op-amps. Other notable additions include a Pultec-style air frequency booster, a mono/stereo decoder, high-impedance line/instrument TRS inputs, and an ‘anti-thump’ phantom power switching system. Moreover, the internal AC mains power supply is switchable (240V/120V).
The manufacturer describes the RP-2 preamp as massive and dynamic sounding with plenty of sonic detail. The very low self noise makes it especially suitable for use with ribbon microphones. Maximum gain is 60dB. There are also pad (-20dB), phase inversion, and low-cut (50Hz) switches.
Price and availability
The unit is priced EUR 3790, firmly in the boutique/hi-end studio gear segment. The RP-2 with remote control and power supply ships with custom made cables, mic head dust protection cover, and a flight case. The product is covered by full 2-year warranty.
