Hide audio content in your audio files with DECODER / ENCODER apps!
Developer Giorgio Sancristoforo has a really interesting software line-up. Last time we heard of him, he modeled a bespoke TASCAM tape recorder and turned it into an effects unit. Now, Giorgio is onto some bona-fide spy technology with the release of DECODER / ENCODER. These apps let you encode and decode audio data in audio files!
DECODER / ENCODER
What the paid ENCODER app does is mix a second audio track inaudibly into another audio track. The result is an invisible audio message encoded into the file. Volume ratio and the frequency for the hiding place can be determined by the user. Both the hidden and audible audio track are visualized in waveform format.
Likewise, the free DECODER app is used to listen to the hidden audio. It separates the hidden track from the audioble track, but it’s not so simple, actually! The user must input the correct frequency to which the hidden audio was encoded into the audible file. Only then the audio will be decyphered.
Supported formats
Due to technical limitations, only 48 kHz AIFF, WAV and MP3 audio files are supported. Otherwise, the process won’t work. However, hidden audio can be embedded in video files as well – assuming their audio tracks are in the same 48 kHz compressed or uncompressed format.
DECODER / ENCODER is a great idea for playing hidden object games or adding a bit of mystery and intrigue to your art. The use of these apps is entirely up to your imagination, which makes them so creative! I can already picture artists encoding audio for their fans to decode as part of a contest or promotion.
Price and availability
The DECODER app is free, but the ENCODER app costs EUR 15. The software is available for Windows and macOS. The apps can be demoed on both operating systems for free.
