This week on Guitar Gear Gems we take a look at the forthcoming Skeleton Key by Funny Little Boxes, a pedal that unlocks that QOTSA guitar tone and the Death By Audio Disturbance 3-in-1 modulation pedal. But before we do, set aside just under 18 minutes, grab a drink and watch the Gas Powered Guitar in action.

Gas Powered Guitar

Yes, you read that correctly. YouTube content creator Mattias Krantz has built a 4-stroke petrol engine into an electric guitar so that it can power the instrument.

The project is based around a Ferrari Red Jackson Flying V and possibly the dumbest thing I have seen all year, but it really did make me laugh out loud.

The video entitled “I made the worlds first GAS POWERED Guitar” is well worth a watch.

Mmmm, Petrol…

If you would like to smell like you are covered in petrol and make an ungodly racket, this video is going to be for you.

During the project, you’ll see Mattias use trial and error, plus brute force to fit a small petrol engine to the guitar.

Pipe Bending

It includes pipe bending, working out engine timing, removing hum and essentially making a complete mess multiple times before pulling off the final finished project.

I really think he should have played Ministry’s Jesus Built My Hotrod on it though.

Skeleton Key

Funny Little Boxes built a strong reputation based on the 1991 pedal from 2021. The overdrive pedal was based on Pearl Jam’s guitar tones from their groundbreaking debut album.

UK Built

This small independent pedal company is based in Norwich, UK.

Andy Llgunas, the gentleman that runs Funny Little Boxes spent 2021 undergoing treatment for cancer. Thankfully he has now physically recovered and is now working on this latest project which should be out sometime later this year.

QOTSA Tone

The new Skeleton Key pedal is in the works and is designed to capture the Josh Homme guitar tones of  Queens Of The Stone Age.

Described by Andy as “an op amp-based distortion pedal with a unique voice and specifically tuned gain stages so that when you put it between your amp and down-tuned, humbucker-loaded guitar you can nail a range of the incredible tones on offer throughout the QOTSA back catalogue”

It also features artwork by Boneface, the artist who has worked on QOTSA albums since Villains.

Pre-Order

Preorders are now open for a limited run of just 100 Skeleton Key pedals priced at £99 each.

That is very cheap in my opinion and if it is as well made as the 1991, then it is a bit of a steal, especially if it delivers those Josh Homme tones it is based on. The Let’s Play All video below offers a sneak preview of the pedal in action and it sounds pretty good already.

Death By Audio

Finally, the Death By Audio Disturbance is a 3-in-1 modulation pedal and offers extreme filter, flanger and phaser effects.

The pedal’s Trip footswitch can also freeze the LFO sweep making for some pretty interesting effects and there is a CV out as well.

Oddball Modulation

Perfect for players that want comb filtering, plus psychedelic flanging and 8-stage phasing effects. This pedal is all about taking modulation to the max.

Controls consist of Tensity, Center Point, Width and Speed, along with a three-way switch for choosing which effect mode it is in Filter, Flanger, Fazer and the aforementioned Trip switch.

It features top-mounted jacks and is powered by an external 9-volt power supply.
