These were first announced back during NAMM in January and are inspired by the late Chris Cornell, who can be seen playing a gold one with Soundgarden in the Black Hole Sun video, which many players will recognise. He also used one in the studio, along with his old Jazzmaster, to record the Superunknown album with.

The Gretsch Vintage Select 89 is available in three finishes: Silver Sparkle Jet, Gold Sparkle Jet and Black Duo Jet.  All versions come with a silver plexi pickguard, Bigsby B3C tremolo and an Adjust-O-Matic bridge which is sat on a rosewood base. You also get a pair of TV Jones Classic Plus (bridge) and Classic (neck) humbuckers, which can reproduce the crisp Filtertron sound that players expect from this style of guitar.

Construction

Construction-wise you have a chambered mahogany body and a 24.6″ scale-length set maple neck, with a 12″ radius  rosewood fretboard and 22 medium jumbo frets. You also get a set of Pearloid Hump Block inlays. The combination of the medium jumbo frets paired with that flattish fretboard radius should all add up to an easy-to-play guitar. Elsewhere on the neck you have a bone nut and a set of Gotoh tuners.

Retro Vibe and Tone

Overall, these are very nice looking guitars and the build quality looks to be very high. And if you want retro-looks and tones, then I’m sure these guitars will deliver on both fronts. I would quite happily have one of these in my own arsenal.

Unfortunately, the official demo video below focuses a little too much on the gain-ier side of things and kind of barges through what you could potentially achieve from these great looking guitars. The demo may have been inspired by a certain grunge band, which is a pity, as I wish they had gone a little more in depth with the demos.
