Goodhertz LA-210: Opto Compressor, Soft Clip, and Cassette Tape as a Free Plugin
Goodhertz Gives Away the Best Analog Sounds from Its Catalog in One Completely Free Plugin
Goodhertz is known for high-quality, sonically distinctive plugins, and now one of them is completely free. The LA-210 combines three of the most popular sonic elements from the Goodhertz catalog into a single free plugin: an opto compressor, a soft clip saturation stage, and a cassette tape model. Still in beta, but already available to download. And as Goodhertz confirms: it will always be free.
Goodhertz LA-210: Everything You Need to Know About the Free Opto Compressor and Saturation Plugin
What Is the LA-210?
Goodhertz describes the LA-210 perfectly as a “greatest hits of our catalog’s gnarliest sounds.” Concretely, three components are packed inside: the opto compressor from Tupe, one of the developer’s most popular tube plugins, the “Chino” soft clip saturation mode from VCME, and the FE90 cassette tape model with tape speed control from Tupe Wow. A brickwall limiter from VCME rounds things out. Anyone familiar with these plugins knows what that means: this isn’t a hastily assembled freebie, but a carefully curated package of proven building blocks.
The interface looks unusual at first glance and actually resembles a freeway map, which is no coincidence. The name LA-210 refers to Highway 210 in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California, a constant in the daily life of the Goodhertz team since the company’s founding. Behind the unconventional visuals sits a very direct, practical signal routing. Quite charming, honestly.
What Does the LA-210 Sound Like?
The LA-210 is not a precision tool, and that’s entirely intentional. Goodhertz puts it plainly: “Can it do everything? No. Can it destroy your signal with analog goodness? Yes.” That’s the whole pitch. Anyone who wants to color their mix with analog character, warm compression, and a touch of saturation without spending anything gets a genuinely solid tool here.
The opto compressor works smoothly and musically, the soft clip stage adds harmonic saturation without tearing the sound apart, and the tape model brings that characteristic light layer of grit that analog recordings are known for. Together they make for a plugin insert that immediately makes a track feel more alive and less digital. Really interesting for beginners and experienced producers alike!
Beta Phase and Availability
The LA-210 is currently in beta, with Beta 1 already available for download on Mac and Windows. Goodhertz hasn’t said how many beta rounds there will be, but the goal is clear: refine the plugin until it’s ready for a final release. And it will stay free throughout, which Goodhertz has explicitly confirmed.
The download is available directly on the Goodhertz website. An account is required but also completely free to create.
Verdict
With the LA-210, Goodhertz has done exactly the right thing: no another utility plugin, but something that’s genuinely fun and sounds great immediately. For a free plugin, the sonic substance here is remarkably high, and anyone who knows Tupe, VCME, or Tupe Wow from the Goodhertz catalog knows these components come from a very good place. Absolutely worth trying out!
