The website shows three new models, two of which are available directly from Thomann: The Gibson Hummingbird EC Studio and the Hummingbird EC Standard. The cutaway on both acoustic guitars is striking, making it easier to reach the highest frets. In addition, all dreadnoughts in the series are built in the traditional square shoulder style.

In other words, the top is completely flat, unlike a sloped shoulder. For the Studio version, Gibson uses solid Sitka spruce for the top and solid mahogany for the body. The direct response of spruce meets the warmth of mahogany for a great combination!

The neck is also made of mahogany, as is the fingerboard. The dimensions result in a scale length of 24.8 inches (629 mm) with a fretboard radius of 16 inches (41 mm), and a TUSQ nut (1.73 inches / 43.8 mm wide) is also included. The bridge is also made of rosewood and the guitar is equipped with Grover Rotomatic tuners. An L.R. Baggs Element Bronze pickup delivers crystal clear sound to any PA.

Studio vs. Standard

But let’s talk looks for a second. The Studio model comes with a striking tri-burst satin finish and a five-ply top and three-ply back binding. 20 frets with parallelogram inlays complete the look.

The Gibson Hummingbird EC Standard is similar to the Studio in many ways. Same woods, Tusq nut, 20 frets, same scale length. But visually, the Standard is in a class of its own. Here, Gibson uses the lighter Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish. In addition, this model comes with a significantly shorter neck, and the fretboard radius is only 12 inches (30.48 mm). It also features a higher-end pickup system: L.R. Baggs VTC.
