Extreme has just released a new video for their track ‘X OUT’ from the 2023 album ‘Six’. Have they lost their rock routes? Or should we accept their new direction?

Extreme: Where’s the rock?

For many, we associate the Boston group with their legacy hits like More Than Words or Decadance Dance. Their rock style is unique, taking elements of Motley Crue and Van Halen, but turned up a notch.

Nuno Bettencourt’s enviable guitar playing and Garry Cherone’s high-energy vocals have carried the band since 1985. Having seen Extreme play live in August 2025, I can confirm that they’ve still got it, and played hit after hit for two hours straight.

Without being that guy who is stuck in their ways, is X OUT just a step too far from their routes? Should we welcome their new music, or do we just want big guitar solo rock ballads?

X OUT

The track comes from Extreme’s most recent album, titled Six, that was released back in 2023. However, the music video for the particular song dropped on September 16th, 2025.

More Information

Coming away from their rock and metal routes, X OUT has a kind of System Of A Down vibe, especially with the vocal line. Perhaps using elements of foreign scales, such as the Hungarian Minor or Hirajoshi scales. Seen elsewhere with the likes of Megadeth.

The video sees Nuno, Pat and Kevin riding on the back of a truck, while Garry wanders the desert like a lost Jedi warrior. We know that Extreme are big fans of Queen, and the steampunk-style bassline is reminiscent of Breakthru, as are the visuals of that song’s music video. Freddie, Brian, Roger and John are on a moving train. There are a lot of similarities.

Audience Feedback

Realistically, the band have got to a point where they can release what they like. But, just like with any older group that’s well established, you’ll either sink or swim with new material.

Overall, diehard fans are smitten with the music video and indeed the song itself. There’s no denying the badass nature of the whole Mad Max vibe of the video, which was directed by Nuno himself.

High praise indeed from some listeners saying that the group are ‘ever evolving’, which is a fair point. You could slam them for not sticking to their regular guns, or you could compliment them on how diverse they are as a group. Furthermore, Garry has been compared to Chris Cornell by many. One of Rock’s greatest vocalists?

Nuno’s Solo

Once again, another guitar masterclass when it comes to the solo. Nuno isn’t just shredding notes for the sake of it either. The entire composition is calculated, formulaic and virtuosic. It fits the overall mood of the song.

More Information

Away from X OUT, Nuno is still rocking in the only way he knows how! Having recently played alongside YUNGBLUD, Steven Tyler and others in a tribute to the late Prince Of Darkness at the VMAs. As you’d expect, he made light work of Rhoads’ Crazy Train Solo, and played the harrowing twelve-string part on Mamma, I’m Coming Home.

Time to Get The Funk Out?

Personally, I’m not sure where I stand on the video or the song. I wouldn’t call myself a diehard fan, but I’ll always turn up one of their hits if they come on in the car. Over the first few days, the new video has had 169,000 views. That’s blistering considering that the original official audio has only had 15,000 views in nearly three years.

I don’t think that Extreme intended for this to be one of their next latest and greatest, but it’s not as if they didn’t put a lot of effort into it. Musically, it’s a fantastic composition, and as ever, for us guitarists, there’s again so much that we can learn from Nuno’s playing.

As Garry said in their breakthrough 1990 hit, ‘if you don’t like what you see here, get the funk out!’. This is very true. We live in a world where people are so quick to complain. If you don’t like something, don’t watch it; it’s as easy as that. However, I do believe that X OUT is still worth your time.
