Ernie Ball Music Man’s eye-catching signature guitar for art-rock idol Annie Clark aka St Vincent is now available in a special new version loaded with a set of three gold foil pickups. The Goldie 2021 edition will also see three new finishes.

This latest version of the St Vincent Signature model subtly pushes the design in a new direction. It still has that utilitarian, edgy ‘shovel’ look, but paired here with new pickups. And the new colour options for 2021 are lovel, too. The new Cashmere, Velveteen and Silk Charmeuse colours all come with a three-layer parchment coloured pickguard, which I think suits all three equally well.

 Gold Foils Pickups

Dubbed the “St. Vincent Goldie”, this new version stands apart from the existing St Vincent range because of three Ernie Ball Music Man gold foil humbuckers. These have been designed for a “vintage sound” and are wired up via a 5-way switch. They can be accessed individually or in pairs, as usual.

Another nice little update is the brass saddles, which should affect the tone subtly and possibly give you a slightly warmer tone, with a bit less zing. The other headline features are a lightweight okoume body with a roasted figured maple neck and a reversed headstock. The fretboard is rosewood (Velveteen) or ebony (Cashmere and Silk Charmeuse), depending. on which colour you opt for.

Refined?

These look like great guitars! I have played the standard version that came out in 2016 and it sounded lovely. These new pickups could be a nice variation on that theme. On paper, these sound like a winner. I enjoy gold foil pickups, as they often have a nice, sweet tone to them. You will see these new Goldie versions sometime around June, but you can pre-order them with dealers now.

You can see the new guitar in action on the SNL video below, where St Vincent performs “The Melting of the Sun”.

RRP: $2999 / €2,797

I really like the polygonal aestethic concept of this guitar, but the round Ernie Ball headstock just doesn’t fit on it. They should have redesigned it. Not every guitar of a certain company must have the identical headstock. Look at Fender, Ibanez or many others…

That should have said: Would like to see this config on a Mariposa or Albert Lee body. More of a firebird vii vibe.
