Easy Listening

EarthQuaker Devices’ Easy Listening is a one knob pedal-format analog circuit with a distinct 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb preamp circuitry voice. The design is essentially a headphone amp, with the ability to also double up as an interface for your DAW in an ampless setup.

The single control is for the output level, and the pedal has a mono input and a stereo output (on ¼” TRS), perfect for headphones or an audio interface. It has an LED indicator to let you know it is powered up, but that is about it.

Being an EQD pedal, it was specifically designed to work well with effect pedals, and so it reacts just like a standard guitar amp, and takes pedals very well.

High Input

The analog circuit has a 1 MOhm input impedance and lots of headroom, which means it will work well with drive pedals, and so guitarists can hammer the front end with fuzz pedals and overdrives.

The American voiced preamp circuitry combined with analog cabinet simulation is a perfect match, and the demo above sounds great. EQD describes it as offering a “rich low-end resonance, slightly scooped mids, and that crystalline top end chime”.

Simple To Use & Future Proof

It is basic, easy to use, and designed to just work. Requiring no smartphone apps or menu diving, and firmware updates. I you need something that will just do the job, then I think this is the one for you, as sometimes having a lot of options can end up causing option paralysis, which just hinders the flow of creativity.

The unit powers from a standard 9-volt DC power supply with a 2.1mm negative tip.

A bit steep compared to what’s available nowadays for $100?
I’ve even seen the Boss IR-2 @ £129 and obviously there’s the Tonex and countless other “amp in a box” pedals with more control on the pedal or via external app.
