ConvertWithMoss is a free software application that converts between many different multi-sample banks. The app works with many different file types, some of them among the most common ones in the sample market. This way, you can exchange samples between different hardware and software samplers. Without an app like this one, it can be quite a headache!

ConvertWithMoss: Free converter for multi-samples

There are far too many formats for samples, especially for multi-samples. Each differs in how audio is tagged, what metadata is included, how key groups are set up, and how velocity layers are done. If you have ever tried to convert a SoundFont instrument into a format that works in, say, DecentSampler, you know just how tedious this conversion can be.

ConvertWithMoss has been around since December 2021. It is the sole work of one Jürgen Mossgraber. He originally developed it as a tool to convert different multi-sample formats into one that Bitwig Studio’s sampler can use. However, over time, the app has grown in functionality and supported file formats. And best of all, it’s free!

What formats does the converter support?

And these days, the app converts between various formats, both software and hardware. And Mossgraber is continually updating the app. In the latest version, you can even “feed” ConvertWithMoss with a folder full of WAV files, and it will automatically convert it to the desired format.

ConvertWithMoss currently supports sample file types from various apps, plugins, and devices:

It is quite possible that more formats will be added. In any case, users constantly express new wishes in the KVR forum. Many have been asking for Logic EXS/Sampler support because the DAW’s built-in auto-sampler makes creating sample packs from hardware synths super easy. But so far, Mossgraber has said he would have to reverse engineer Apple’s proprietary file format in order for this to work, and that that is too cumbersome for a project that is mainly a labor of love. We can only hope!

But given that, Mossgraber distributes the app under an open-source license and its code is available on GitHub, maybe someone else knowledgeable about EXS and Logic can help.
