Brian Wilson Dies at 82: The Brains Behind Pet Sounds at Peace
Beach Boys founding member, Brian Wilson, has passed away aged 82. The musical virtuoso behind countless hit records.
Brian Wilson Dies at 82
Another sad day for the music community. Following a statement from the Wilson family, today we learned of the sad passing of Brian Wilson. Founding member of The Beach Boys, writer, composer, pianist, bassist, son, father and grandfather.
Born in 1942 in California, Brian would later form The Beach Boys in 1961 along with fellow family and friends. Initially captivating the Surf Sound of the early ’60s, Wilson’s Bass playing was holding his musical potential from greater things.
The Pet Sounds album from 1966 was locked away in Wilson’s, arguably troubled, head. Following its release, the world was a better place. Plus, Pet Sounds is what The Beatles were worried about when working on their own Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album.
The Wilson Brothers Together Again
A truly family affair, Brian had two younger brothers, Carl and Dennis. Dennis passed away in 1983 following an accident out at sea. Whereas Carl battled with Cancer and left us in 1998.
Together, the three brothers, along with cousin Mike Love and friends Al Jardine and David Marks, would create some of the most captivating vocal harmonies the world had ever heard.
Musical Virtuoso
Having started playing a Fender Precision Bass in the early days, Wilson had an ear for music that the rest of the group just couldn’t keep up with. Just take Good Vibrations, Wilson knew exactly how he wanted each section to sound. Furthermore, he knew that the vocals belonged to his beloved brother, Carl.

The late George Martin described him as a ‘living genius of pop music’. Compliments don’t get much better than that.
So, we wish to say rest in peace to one of the most influential people that rock music has ever had the pleasure of knowing.

My abiding recent-ish memory of Brian is his appearance at Glastonbury with a Beach Boys tribute band, and members of the crowd being joyfully carried aloft on a surfboard. Crowd absolutely loved it. Rest in peace, Brian.
So cool. A lot of their early stuff is loved by many, you can’t beat that surf sound.
