Bitwig Studio 6: More Creativity with Automation Clips and More!

Bitwig Studio 6 takes the development of this creative DAW to the next level. The update delivers technical improvements and expands key features so consistently that the software feels completely reimagined in many areas. The focus is on striking a balance between a faster workflow and profound creative possibilities. Particularly exciting are the expanded automation features, the project-wide key signature and the redesigned GUI. The latter gives you even more freedom to optimise your workflows and make them easier to implement.

A particular highlight of Bitwig Studio 6 is the extensive automation upgrade. Every detail has been refined to make curves more intuitive and precise to edit. Alongside simplified gestures, new features include “Spread”, which enables you to generate random values, and “Hold”, which maintains constant values until the next point. Similarly, inserting automation clips changes the workflow permanently, as they can be used, looped and edited just like audio or MIDI clips. This brings automation processes closer to the heart of the creative process, not just the fine-tuning at the end of a project.

Automation Reimagined!

Bitwig Studio 6 also introduces clip aliases, making it much easier to control patterns and structures across a project. Rather than creating countless duplicates of a clip, a single alias is sufficient and automatically adjusts all associated clips when changes are made. This makes life much easier for sound designers who create complex arrangements with many repetitive elements. However, those who prefer to work independently can remove clips from the alias structure at any time. This feature is complemented by the new project-wide key signature function, which is integrated directly into the piano roll. This automatically adjusts notes to the desired scale and also dynamically follows this setting for note FX.

Visually and functionally, a lot has also changed: the Bitwig Studio 6 interface has been modernised and now offers more customisation options for individual workflows. Tools such as the new spray can tool and the improved audition tool enable you to work directly within the arrangement. Layer editing has been overhauled to enable the simultaneous and clear editing of multiple clips. Meanwhile, new security features ensure that older projects are automatically saved when opened, so experimenting with the new version poses no risk.
