Baby Audio IHNY-2

When Baby Audio’s first plug-in I Heart NY came out three years ago, it quickly made a name for itself with its simple, but effective approach to NY-style parallel compression. Now, the developer presents a big update. Baby Audio IHNY-2 picks up where the predecessor left off and adds many new features for tailoring the sound to your needs. The developer calls it “the hardest hitting compressor in the industry”, so IHNY-2 clearly isn’t for the faint of heart.

The predecessor’s two knobs and one fader have been replaced with a big X/Y pad, which allows you to adjust the amount of compression and the dry/wet mix at the same time. This makes it easy to find the sweet spot for your track or mix. As you move the node around the pad to find the perfect balance of compression and effect amount, an autogain algorithm ensures a consistent output level.

Tweak Panel

Tweak Panel

Baby Audio has also added a new Tweak Panel for deeper sound shaping. It gives you access to many additional parameters that weren’t user-controllable in the first version. Besides adjusting the attack, release, and ratio, the Tweak Panel lets you emphasize transients (Punch), add harmonic saturation (Harmonics), and apply a custom “smiley EQ curve” to bring out the lows and highs (Shape). There’s even a Tilt parameter that focuses the compression on either the low or high frequencies, and an option to preserve frequencies above or below the cutoff points (Lo + Hi Preserve).

That’s plenty of tweakability and IHNY-2 lets you dive much deeper than its predecessor. Despite the many new features, the plug-in still looks easy enough to operate thanks to the X/Y pad and the uncluttered GUI. If it sounds as good as Baby Audio claims, I’m sure it’ll make its way into many professional mixers’ arsenals in no time.

Price and compatibility

Baby Audio IHNY-2 is now available for an introductory price of USD 39 (down from USD 69). The upgrade from the previous version costs USD 25. You can get the plug-in and the upgrade at Plugin Boutique*.

The plug-in runs on macOS 10.7 or higher (including native support for Apple Silicon processors) and Windows 7 or higher. It’s available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
