RODE NT-SF1 brings 3D Surround recording to sub-USD 1000 price point
Australian microphone maker RODE has partnered up with ambisonic microphone inventors SoundField to create a sub-USD 1000 3D recording microphone — the NT-SF1.
The microphone features a completely new RODE capsule, designed for low noise, smoothness, and extended frequency response. There are four of these in the mic, arranged in a tetrahedral array. The resulting recordings are four-channel A-format, which can be transformed and manipulated in B-Format with the soon-to-be-released SoundField by RODE plug-in.
The ambisonic arrangement and tuning are drawn from high-end SoundField technology; the manufacturer promises accurate spatialisation and 3D audio positioning.
A broadcast-grade, 360-degree surround sound capture microphone, the NT-SF1 is useful for music recording, 3D soundscapes, capturing audio for VR, and other kinds of multi-channel spatial reproduction. It’s due for release soon, priced USD 999.
This is excellent news for professional recordists of all backgrounds. A high-quality Surround mic at a fair price point will enable the creation of 3D content across a broad range of platforms like PC, console, and mobile. It will also let musicians experiment with spatial positioning, which can produce interesting sonic results.

Annoying that all and sundry, especially Røde, are completely ignoring the Tetra Mic. Exactly the same configuration , similar price. Tetra Mic is comparable to the super expensive original Soundfield mics, but at a fraction of cost and have been around for ages. If anything those guys are punk!
