Suno claims the old 5.5 voices are still usable, but according to that same post, they don’t sound anything like they did in version 5.5 anymore. Words like “muddy” and “muffled” show up constantly across the subreddit at this point, and one satirical fake leak of a supposed follow-up update pokes fun at the degraded sound quality directly.
I get where this criticism is coming from, honestly. Suno’s vocals have always struck me as pretty thin and unnaturally recorded, even in earlier versions, especially compared to quality real vocal recordings. Having tested v6 myself, the vocals genuinely sound flatter now compared to the previous version, less depth, less body, less overall dynamics. To me, that reads more like papering over the old problem than an actual improvement.
A New Lawsuit From Sony Music and Universal Music
Alongside the user backlash, Suno’s legal situation is anything but calm right now. According to Variety, Sony Music and Universal Music filed a new 45-page lawsuit on September 18, the second major lawsuit from the labels against Suno since the first one back in 2024. The claim: v6 still infringes on Sony’s and UMG’s copyrighted catalog, even if the new model was built on top of earlier, allegedly infringing Suno models.
Training a “new” model on the output of an infringing model doesn’t eliminate the infringement, the labels argue via Variety, it just launders it. V6 isn’t really a fresh start, in their view, it’s “the fruit of the same poisoned tree.”
My Take on the Labels’ Lawsuit
Honestly, I think the labels are taking the easy way out here, probably because they can’t really keep up with the sheer flood of AI music apps at this point. Still, labels of all people should be standing 100 percent behind artists and rights holders, and every open issue should genuinely be sorted out before announcing new partnerships like the one with Warner Music, BMG, and Believe.
What This Means for Suno Users Right Now
For users, the situation stays messy for now. On one side, there’s a community that’s clearly unhappy with v6’s sound quality, some canceling their subscriptions outright. On the other, labels keep pushing legal action against Suno despite the fresh partnerships.
