Audient Horizon: The New Apollo Killer?
A high-end scalable multichannel interface for hybrid setups.
The Audient Horizon series offers three new multichannel audio interfaces aimed at different-scale studio setups and different applications.
The British console manufacturer Audient entered the audio interface market back in 2013 with the introduction of the now-popular iD Series that has become a home recording staple. With the Horizon Series, Audient takes things to a new level, with reference-quality conversion, ADAT expansion, and scalable architecture with digital recall.
Audient Horizon
The first thing you’ll notice about the Horizon series is that they almost look and feel more like professional AD/DA converters than audio interfaces. This is mostly due to the analog outputs being almost exclusively available via D25 connectors, save for a pair of TRS outputs, as well as a pair of TRS inputs.
All three interfaces in the series have 32-bit 192 kHz recording capabilities and connect via Thunderbolt 3. Starting with the Horizon 8P, a 24×32 interface with eight console-style mic preamps with ORBIT Control variable impedance. Because the Horizon 16 and Horizon 32 have limited controls on the front panel compared to the 8P, these are ideal for expanding the I/O of your chain of multiple Horizon interfaces, depending on your requirements.
While the Horizon 16 provides 34×34 I/O, the Horizon 32 offers 50×50, allowing you to get an astounding 200×200 system with four units chained together. Also, the rugged construction of each unit uses a fanless 1U all-metal chassis and includes a three-year warranty.
Overall, the Horizon is a particularly flexible system that lets you scale up your studio gradually as you grow. The straightforward nature of the Horizon’s design is bound to appeal to musicians and engineers alike, as it will be well-suited for any size studio specializing in tracking, mixing, or analog summing.
