Twisted Electrons FLEXfm: FM Groovebox and Sampler with Analog Filters

Twisted Electrons has unveiled FLEXfm at Superbooth 26: an exciting hybrid groovebox that combines FM synthesis with analog filters and sampling. But what is that joystick for?
Twisted Electrons FLEXfm
The French company Twisted Electrons has made a name for itself with a range of unusual grooveboxes, many of which are based on FM synthesis. Their latest development is FLEXfm – a compact desktop machine with eight voices, FM, sampling, and analog filters. Sounds like a winning combination!
Here’s what we know so far. The FM engine offers four operators and 32 algorithms, which are highly editable. That’s why it’s called FLEX! For each of the eight voices, there’s an analog multi-mode filter for an extra helping of character, similar to TWISTfm.
Unlike TWISTfm, however, FLEXfm also offers a built-in sampler. Yes, that’s right – in addition to importing samples via USB, you can even record your own samples via the audio input. Nice! Resampling is also supported.
Thanks to 12 encoders with LED rings, all important parameters are always within reach. The joystick provides another option for real-time control. Among other things, this lets you seamlessly morph between four patterns or four algorithms. Combined with the possibilities of FM synthesis, this will surely be a never-ending source of unusual sounds and grooves.
Each voice also offers no less than four LFOs, and you can even record your own LFO waveforms using the joystick.

Powerful Sequencing
Like any good groovebox, Twisted Electrons FLEXfm comes with a fully featured sequencer with loads of performance functions. For example, there’s a polyphonic chaining feature, and you can divide steps into up to eight sub-steps. Operator masking lets you create variations of an FM patch per step; think of it as a switch for turning individual operators on or off.
The sequencer also offers a probability engine and snapshot save and recall. Moreover, there’s a mix mode for storing and recalling mix scenes. The velocity-sensitive trigger pad seems to be great for rolls and ghost notes. I assume that it can also be used for real-time recording.
In addition to a stereo output and the audio input for sampling, Twisted Electrons FLEXfm offers individual outputs for each of the eight voices. Very nice!
Price and Availability
Twisted Electrons FLEXfm looks like their most advanced and versatile groovebox so far – I think this will be a winner. Unfortunately, we don’t know yet when it’ll become available and what it’ll cost. We’ll update this post with more information as we receive it.
You can check out the new groovebox at booth O396 at Superbooth 26.
