1010music’s blackbox has been one of the most popular compact samplers for studio production and live performance for years. About seven years after its launch, it was time for an update. The new blackbox 2 picks up where the predecessor left off, but offers twice the processing power, a refreshed user interface, and loads of new possibilities.

The first thing that meets the eye is the updated interface with a large 4-inch color touch display. The four encoders are now located above the screen, with an updated set of buttons at the bottom.

For a more streamlined workflow, the blackbox 2 offers dedicated screens for Launch, Scene, Song, Mixing, and Effects. That’s great news for live performance, but should be helpful in the studio, too.

The Track screen now lets you load up to four one-shot, loop, slicer, or multisample instruments. The one-shot and loop modes each support up to 16 samples per patch. Samples can be streamed from an SD card, which is great for long WAV files (a stronghold of the blackbox ever since it came out) and complex multisamples. There’s also an automated system for creating multisamples of external instruments.

The new user interface isn’t the only hardware improvement. Unlike the predecessor, the blackbox 2 can run on batteries – perfect for sessions on the go. What’s more, the outdated USB-A and USB-B connectors have been replaced with two USB-C ports for host and device, which can now carry multichannel audio in addition to MIDI. The audio I/O is the same, with one stereo input, three stereo outputs, and a headphone jack. Like the predecessor, the blackbox 2 offers TRS MIDI In/Out and Clock In/Out, although the latter are now combined in a single socket.

Price and Availability

The 1010music blackbox 2 is scheduled for release in June 2026 for $649.
