Free Plugins of the Week
Cloudy Samples Filtre: How Much Modulation Would You Like?

Filtre by Cloudy Samples is an incredibly versatile free filter plugin with many opportunities to get creative. It comes with no less than 16 filter modes, including an emulation of the classic Moog ladder filter, several surgical modes for precise frequency shaping, creative and unusual modes like ring modulation, and more. In addition to the frequency, gain, and resonance, you can adjust the balance and stereo width, so Filtre can also generate some interesting stereo effects.
However, the real strength of this plugin lies in the modulation section on the right. There are three independent LFOs for filter frequency, volume, and balance. These can sync to your DAW tempo or run free, and you can set this for each LFO individually. Each LFO also offers Fade-in and Smooth parameters for shaping the modulation curve.
In addition to sine, triangle, sawtooth, square, and random modes, the LFOs also offer a stepped mode and a custom mode that lets you create your own waveshapes using the curve editors. This means that Filtre can create all sorts of wacky rhythmic effects – it’s much more than just a filter!
Filtre is available for macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats.
Subhankardas Nebula De-Esser Annihilates Sibilance

This free de-esser plugin by Subhankardas offers more features and parameters than most paid options. According to the developer, it “runs an Orthogonal Subspace Projection pipeline for reduction control, driven by Teager-Kaiser Energy Operator (TKEO) dynamics instead of legacy spectral compression”. I don’t know what that means, but it does sound good.
You get a whole host of parameters for pinpointing precisely the frequencies you want to get rid of, including minimum and maximum frequency, cut width, depth, and slope, and a choice of relative or absolute modes. A handy spectrum analyzer provides a visual aid. I also like that it has an ‘annihilation meter’ instead of the standard reduction meter. This de-esser means business!
Nebula De-Esser is available for macOS and Linux in CLAP and VST3 formats.
Shadaloo Audio DSP H: Free Loudness and Tone Enhancer

H by Shadaloo Audio DSP is a loudness and tone enhancer that adds density, harmonics, and presence, and helps increase the perceived loudness. According to the developer, it can do anything from subtle polish to obvious saturation, while leaving the musicality and character of the signal intact.
H offers five color modes: Smooth, Soft, Edge, Grit, and Crush. In addition to the central Color knob, there’s a Push control that drives the signal into saturation as you turn it up. A sidechain filter lets you focus on specific frequencies. There’s also a Blend control for parallel processing
H is available for macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats.
