Until March 1, Acon Digital is offering Limit as a free mastering plugin. It doesn’t push itself into the spotlight but focuses on what a good limiter should do: raise loudness without audibly compromising your mix. No artificial harshness, no pumping, no unnecessary extras. Instead, the plugin delivers clean level control and a stable stereo image — often the decisive factor on the master bus. It shines when you want to push your tracks forward without sacrificing dynamics or transients. Since this offer is only available for a limited time, now is the right moment to take a closer look.

Conceptually, Limit operates as a two-stage limiter for mixing and mastering. The emphasis is not on tonal coloration, but on precise level control. As loudness increases, tonality and stereo width remain stable. On the master bus or on groups with pronounced transients, the plugin delivers a more controlled and professional overall sound while preserving detail and reliably preventing clipping.

Internally, the processing is clearly divided into two sections. First, a pre-compression stage tames peaks before they reach the final limiter. This enables smoother behavior and reduces the risk of audible artifacts. The subsequent brickwall stage then defines the absolute ceiling. Instead of a traditional threshold control, intensity is adjusted via the input gain. As the level rises, the plugin reduces dynamics in a consistent and predictable way.

Attack and release times can be adjusted with precision to match the material. Moderate settings work well for mastering, but ultimately your ears should make the call. The auto-release function reacts dynamically to changing signal behavior and automatically adapts the release time. Separate link options for the pre-stage and peak section provide more detailed control over stereo behavior. Tighter linking stabilizes the center image, while looser settings preserve movement across the stereo field.

With up to 15 milliseconds of look-ahead, the limiter detects upcoming peaks early and processes them cleanly. Modern DAWs automatically compensate for the resulting latency. 4x oversampling further increases precision, especially in true-peak-sensitive projects.
