The Shure KSM series has expanded with three new condenser mics for studio applications, including two cardioid and one multipattern mic.

The KSM mic series was first introduced by Shure back in 1999 and became renowned for its natural, uncoloured sound and low self-noise design. At NAMM this year, Shure unveils three new KSM mics in slightly different price ranges, each designed to capture high-quality vocal and instrument recordings.

In this new line, the KSM32C uses a precision-manufactured ¾-inch capsule that offers a balanced frequency curve with exceptional low-end response and off-axis rejection. To suit different applications, it’s available in a Stage Kit (KSM32C/HM) with the hard mount and foam windscreen or the Studio Kit (KSM32C/SM) with the shock mount and magnetic pop filter.

Meanwhile, the KSM40C and KSM44MP have larger 1-inch capsules that deliver incredible detail in the highs, while the design of the backplate enhances the acoustic behaviour to suppress resonances. With the larger diaphragms, the KSM40C and KSM44MP can be used for a wide range of applications, such as vocals, guitars, piano, kick drum, and in overhead configurations.

Besides the fact that the dual-diaphragm KSM44MP is a multipattern mic with cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8 pickup modes, it has a slightly pronounced high-frequency range, whereas the cardioid-only KSM40C has an enhanced low-end. All models include a shock mount, pop filter, thread adapter, and protective case.

Overall, the new KSM series mics offer some interesting options with the neutral response of the entry-level KSM32C, and the slightly enhanced frequency curves of the KSM40C and KSM44MP. As Shure is a market leader in microphone technology, you can trust that you’ll get decent results, whichever one you’re working with.
