Fors Junior: A Game Boy-style 4-bit Wavetable Synth
A fun way to enjoy 4-bit sounds in your DAW.
Fors Junior is a 4-bit wavetable synth plugin inspired by the sound engine from the Nintendo Game Boy, and there’s even a free version.
Fors is a software developer known for its innovative Max for Live devices, so you can expect plenty of value here with an excellent balance of creative soundshaping power and intuitive GUI.
Fors Junior
Junior instantly delivers the nostalgic aesthetic of those raw, shrill waveforms that have a uniquely emotive quality and cut through any mix. Instead of viewing 4-bit sound creation as a limitation, Fors has built a unique platform for producing these rich harmonic tones with a 7-bit LFSR noise generator.
In addition, Junior is equipped with four modulators inspired by the tracker Tables found in hardware and software such as M8, Defmon, and LSDj. This 16-step modulation sequencer can operate as an arpeggiator, an LFO, an envelope, a MIDI input mapper, or many other configurations.
Naturally, Junior captures the magic of the Game Boy sound, but it does more than just emulate the iconic handheld gaming device. Although you can access the classic sounds, the modern controls let you do something new, and the interface has a nice combination of precision and creative intuition.
What’s more, there is MPE continuous pitch bend support, CLAP Note Expressions, and ODDSound MTS-ESP to create expressive bends in different tunings. Overall, Junior promises to be plenty of fun, and the stereo 2-voice unison mode sounds like a great tool for leads and bass sounds.
