Behringer UB-Xa Mini: Oberheim to Go
The Behringer UB-Xa Mini brings the sound of the flagship UB-Xa polysynth to the compact and affordable Mini series. Three oscillators, filter, sequencer—what more could you want?
Behringer UB-Xa Mini
Just two days after the CZ-1 Mini, Behringer has unveiled the UB-Xa Mini, another member of the compact Mini family that was first announced quite a while ago. While the CZ-1 Mini was unashamedly digital, you can immediately tell from the name and the stylish pinstripe design that the UB-Xa Mini is all about analog Oberheim sound.
Compared to the 16-voice UB-Xa, the sound engine has of course been cut down to the bare essentials. However, the UB-Xa Mini does contain the most important building blocks of the Oberheim sound in a bite-sized format. Like all members of the Mini series, it offers three oscillators that can be played paraphonically, letting you play 3-voice chords. A detune function provides fat unison sounds when desired. The low-pass filter offers two selectable slopes (12 or 24 dB/oct.), which is why Behringer calls it a “dual filter”. According to the manufacturer, the audio signal path is completely analog.

In addition, the UB-Xa Mini features a ring modulator that expands the sonic spectrum to all sorts of metallic timbres. For modulation, there’s an ADSR envelope and an LFO with three waveforms. The 16-step sequencer offers ten memory slots and lets you record knob movements (motion sequencing).
The synth is controlled via the built-in touch keyboard with 27 keys. It is also fully MIDI-controllable via USB-C or the 5-pin MIDI input. Analog sync jacks allow for synchronization with drum machines, sequencers, modular systems, and the like.

One response to “Behringer UB-Xa Mini: Oberheim to Go”
That’s robbery, surely, at £85, for a 3 osc synth, sequencer with motion lanes? Time to give Behringer a bit of credit for the price of it new, it’s cheaper than many second hand Volcas. Bargain!
