Spectrasonics Omnisphere 3 – The Best Just Got Better and Bigger!
The undisputed king of software synths just got a massive update. Can Omnisphere 3 still cut it all these years on?
I have a confession to make. In all my years of making music, I have never used nor played with Spectrasonics Omnisphere. Despite almost everyone else on the planet having done so, and having been told countless times how good it is, I just haven’t been drawn to it.
Maybe this is because I own a shedload of other plugins, or maybe the unwavering price of Omnisphere has sometimes put me off. I can’t tell you, honestly. However, I cannot deny how impressive it seems, and now, it has just received a huge, nay, massive update. Is this where my resolve breaks? Let’s see what Omnisphere 3 has going for it.
Omnisphere 3
Omnisphere 3 brings 18 new libraries. 18!! Everything from Retro Vibes to Scoring Electronic, Analog Vibes to Ambient Dreams. All of these have been created by Spectrasonics inhouse sound design team, led by one of the greatest and most recognised sound designers of all time, Eric Persing.
As well as new sounds, Omnisphere has a whole host of new synthesis and sound design features. A new global control screen offers quick and immediate overall control of a patch. A new Mutations feature gives users a single-click feature that creates variations of the currently selected patch. That’s neat.

New FX
Other new features in Omnisphere include 36 new filter types, circuit modelled saturation, vintage oscillator drift, MPE and classic glide modes that emulate the portamento curves of vintage synths like the OBXa, Minimoog and ARP Odyssey. It also emulates the CS-80 glissando!
One impressive feature of Omnisphere has been massively expanded in this new version. When Eric excitedly introduced hardware integration into Omnisphere, it was a groundbreaker. Rather than adapt controllers and synths to work with the software, the software adapted to the synth or controller you had.

Expanded Hardware Integration
Spectrasonics claims that they now support every major brand of synthesizer and MIDI controller. With over 300 new hardware profiles, it’s possible that every synth or controller you have is now an Omnisphere controller!
And it’s not just the synth that’s been greatly expanded. Omnisphere now contains over 35 powerful FX units. Better still, the new Omnisphere FX rack plugin means you can now use these FX independently within your DAW, outside of Omnisphere 3 itself!

Other Improvements
The improvements don’t stop there, but if I carried on, I’d be here all night! There’s a redesigned browser, improved categories and directory tree branching, the ability to hide the sounds you don’t need, new library images, simplified tagging and full compatibility with Omnisphere 1 and 2.
With Omnisphere 3, Spectrasonics have exceeded all of our expectations, and they have firmly reestablished themselves as the absolute leader of the pack when it comes to a single, solitary powerhouse that could mean you never use anything else again.
