Electronic Wind Instruments might appear to be a niche market, but they’re far from it. Roland adds the Brisa to its already impressive DWI lineup.

Humans have been making music by blowing into or across things for millennia, so it stood to reason that when we came up with synths, we might try to do the same with that technology. There have been many attempts, using different methods, mostly centred around reed based paradigms.

Initial ventures into wind control focused on breath being the trigger. Soon, this evolved into breath being an expressive controller and soon, we were connecting these controllers to synth and sample engines to try and successfully recreate their acoustic forebears.

The Roland Aerophone Brisa

Akai, Yamaha and Roland have all been doing this for decades, along with many other smaller companies, but no one seems to have successfully ventured into the territory of the flute, until now. Roland’s brand new Aerophone Brisa takes up the challenge.

With the construction and fingering of a traditional flute, Brisa comes with 100 onboard tones. As you’d expect, a good bunch of these are sounds from the flute family, including concert, bass and jazz flutes, as well as Piccolos. There’s also the inevitable Pan Flutes and Shakuhachi!

Players can add harmonies and drones to play along with and there are other realtime controls and an integrated motion sensor to allow the user to apply things like vibrato, pitch-bend and other effects simply by moving their body.

Flexible Connectivity

There’s a built-in speaker but you can also hook it up to headphones and/or a PA for live performance. The USB-C port provides audio and MIDI communication but there is also Bluetooth MIDI so that you can trigger external devices wirelessly from the Brisa. An upcoming phone and tablet app will allow users to control settings and access to the Roland Cloud.

More Information

The Roland Aerophone Brisa is available to order now for €1,699, with the first shipments expected to arrive in November 2025.
