I was a big Cubase user in the early days. After dabbling on an Atari ST, I eventually upgraded to a Windows PC and bought Cubase 3 and benefitted from a grace period upgrade to Cubase VST! That was when there were about three VSTs available and they were all included in Cubase!
Every upgrade cycle, I ponied up another £100 for a new CD and LPT dongle until I got to SX1. And that was where Steinberg lost me. The software had become too messy, too unstable and, quite frankly, too expensive. I ended up moving to Reason and stayed there for many years.
As a music technology journalist, it is incumbent on me to keep up to date with lots of things, and DAWs are one thing I usually have to keep up to date with the latest version, if only to test things out. But I refused to do it with Cubase.

Tascam Portacapture X6 and X8
When it comes to portable, hand-held digital field recorders, Zoom are generally the name that springs to mind for most, but Tascam have always been a strong, if slightly more expensive, competitor. But with the Portacapture X6 and X8 currently boasting discounts up to 13%, you may well be swayed.
The larger X8 is a 6+2 track recorder, which means it can record 4 external inputs and 2 more via the microphones, plus a stereo mix of those 6. There’s a lovely big colour LCD touch screen with a bunch of recording presets to save you messing around when out and about.
