What better way to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Alan R Pearlman than to recreate and expand upon his ARP Odyssey with Cherry Audio’s ODC 2800.

Last week, on June 7th, the Alan R Pearlman Foundation kicked off a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan R Pearlman himself. There was an in-person live event at EMEAPP, with a live streaming option, and there will continue to be a slew of events to mark this special occasion.

The Cherry Audio ODC 2800

One company that has always had close ties with the Foundation is Cherry Audio, and to pay their respects, they have launched the ODC 2800. ODC… geddit?? Say it quickly… there you go! Synth nerds will also happily point out that 2800 was the official model number of the first iteration of the ARP Odyssey.

More Information

As you’d expect from Cherry Audio, this isn’t just a box-ticking recreation of ARP most popular instrument. For a start, they (or should I say Mark Barton) have precisely recreated all three iterations of the Odyssey. Besides the paint jobs, from white to black/gold and then black/orange, the biggest differences between these versions was the filter.

All The Filters!

The 2800 white faced model featured a 4023 12 dB/Oct, 2-pole affair, the subject of much wildly inaccurate folklore in its similarity to the famous Moog ladder filter. The 2810, with its black and gold paint scheme, used a 4035 24 dB/Oct, 4-pole ladder and the final iteration, the black and orange 2820, sported a 4075 24 dB/Oct 4-pole cascade filter.

Each variation has its fans and detractors, so at least with ODC 2800, you have the choice! All three filters also sport high, low and bandpass responses. There’s also a third additional VCO as well as expanded envelopes, additional performance features, such as an arpeggiator, as well as a comprehensive FX section.

In Conclusion

There are loads of other tweaks, additions and enhancements, not least the fact that it has up to 16 voice polyphony and aftertouch and features a brilliant user interface that is both clear to see and follows Alan’s love for using colours to visually link corresponding features together.
