GForce Software have released RE-STRINGS, a Rack Extension polyphonic string synthesizer for Propellerhead Reason. It’s based on their award-winning Virtual String Machine (VSM) virtual instrument. And it brings all that fabulously crunchy vintage string action to your Reason rack.
Re-Strings
Packed full of 67 individual sample sets from 17 rare and sought-after string machines. It covers classic analogue string ensembles including the Solina, the Eminent 310, Freeman String Symphonizer and the Logan String Ensemble. These were never large instruments and so each sample set covers just 4 octaves with each note individually sampled and looped. A patch library of over 700 patches was curated by many respected designers including the legendary string machine user Billy Currie of Ultravox.
Re-String has dual layer capabilities. Each layer has it’s own filter section, envelope generators, LFO and dynamic control. You can combine any two instruments you like to create your own hybrid string machines. At the end of the chain are some vintage-style ensemble and phaser effects.
It doesn’t look as nice as the VSM it’s based upon, but then Rack Extensions never do. However, you do get good clear access to all the parameters and the two layers are nicely set and distinctive. On the back there are some minimal modulation controls over pan, level and filter – not a lot else going on there. Sounds fabulous though.
