EVH has now officially released the Wolfgang Standard Gold Sparkle that was originally announced back in January. Based on the now-classic design by Eddie Van Halen, and now available in a super eye-catching finish. Could this gold guitar be the perfect all-around modern instrument?

Wolfgang Standard Gold Sparkle

This new EVH Wolfgang Standard Gold Sparkle looks pretty shiny! Anyone that reads my guitar articles on a regular basis will know that I’m a big fan of the Wolfgang design. I think Eddie Van Halen put a lot of effort into his own guitar design, and these modern-day Wolfgang guitars by EVH are great value for money. I have yet to find a bad one myself, and I’ve played loads of them

Tonewoods

It comes with a basswood body, paired with a bolt-on 25.5″ scale length baked maple neck, that has a 12”-16” compound radius baked maple fretboard. The neck also has comfortable rolled fingerboard edges, with 22 jumbo frets and black dot fret inlays.

Eddie chose basswood for his signature model, as it has some great tonal properties. Plus, having a baked maple neck will add to the stability of the overall tuning. I’m a huge fan of the heel-mount truss rod adjustment wheel on these guitars, as it makes setups a breeze.

Considering, that these are considered to be the entry-level models for Wolfgangs, I think the specifications are very good. You have a gig-ready instrument here.

EVH Hardware

The Wolfgang Standard comes with a pair of EVH Wolfgang humbucking pickups directly mounted to the body. These are wired with a single volume and tone, plus a three-way pickup selector switch.  Along with a black EVH-branded Floyd Rose Special locking trem system with an R2 locking nut.

Verdict

The guitar has that really stand out Gold Sparkle finish, and a black headstock with matching black hardware throughout. I think it works pretty well, and it’s a bit of a looker. If you have never played a Wolfgang, I would suggest you try them out, as you get a lot of guitar for your money.

They are super comfortable, as they have that offset body shape and work well sitting down, or on a guitar strap. Don’t be put off by the shredder label that these often get put under. I’ve seen players playing blues and country on Wolfgangs, as they are super versatile guitars.

I have a Wolfgang Standard. Overall, happy with it. Unfortunately, a D Tuna wouldn’t work on it. A tech at Guitar Center tried for over an hour, couldn’t get it to stay even close to in tune when switching back n forth. Really disappointed.

These models don’t come as standard with the D-Tuna, so it won’t be an issue. Must say I removed both D-Tuna from my US made Peavey Wolfgangs as well, as I never use it.
