Walrus Audio Xero Polylooper: 2-Channel Stereo Looping
Walrus Audio Xero Polylooper offers No Menu Diving dual-channel, stereo looping!
Walrus Audio has introduced the Xero Polylooper, a new true bypass, dual-channel stereo looper designed to push the boundaries of multi-channel looping. Powered by their proprietary MDSP Module, the Xero aims to make complex looping intuitive, visual, and inspiring for musicians.
Xero Polylooper
The Xero Polylooper offers two fully independent loop channels, providing extensive control over playback speed and direction, alongside three flexible loop modes.
Each of the two independent loop channels on the Xero allows for up to three minutes of recording time with virtually infinite overdubs. Users can independently adjust volume (slider) and pan (knob) for each channel, control playback speed (0.5x, 1x, or 2x), and even reverse playback.
Walrus Audio has made controlling the Xero seamless and intuitive through its dual stomp switches. A tap of the left switch records and plays loops, while holding it down triggers an undo function. The right stomp switch stops loop playback with a tap, and holding it activates speed effects.
No Menu Diving Control
For even greater control, double-pressing both switches toggles channel control, and a double-hold initiates a full stop or erase.
These built-in gestures eliminate the need for menu-diving, allowing musicians to maintain focus on their performance. For those requiring even more direct access, an external dual-stomp switch can be connected to simultaneously command both channels, making it ideal for live performances and complex looping setups.
Three Modes
The Xero Polylooper offers three distinct looping modes to suit various creative workflows. Synced Mode ensures all loops are time-aligned to the first recorded loop, providing a rigid rhythmic structure. Unsynced Mode allows each channel to record loops of completely independent lengths, fostering free-floating textures.
For those interested in intricate rhythmic interplay, Poly Mode enables the creation of polyrhythms using shared time divisions (such as 3:4 or 5:7), resulting in rhythmically interlocking patterns.
The pedal also supports MIDI clock for precision syncing in all modes.
LED Visual Feedback
Each channel features a dedicated multicolour LED system, using red, green, and white to indicate recording and playback status, and cyan, pink, yellow, and blue LEDs to denote different speed effects.
Dedicated red LEDs also display the channel control status, providing instant visual confirmation without guesswork, even during live performances.
Speed FX & Direction Controls
Users can activate Speed FX to toggle between half, normal, and double speed, and independently reverse playback on each channel, allowing for on-the-fly remixes. In Sync and Poly modes, FX activation synchronizes to the loop start, ensuring accurate timing.
The pedal design uses a true relay bypass. When no loops are active, the pedal automatically disengages, preserving the instrument’s dry tone.
The USB-C port can be used for firmware updates.
Verdict
This new stereo, dual-channel looper is going to appeal to many musicians. The fact that it has no menus is great for someone like me, who hates menu diving, but may not be for everyone. Walrus Audio knows how to create road-worthy pedals, so this design should be great for working musicians. As long as you are happy with learning how to operate it via the LED colour system.
