Synapse Audio is known for high-quality emulations of classic vintage synths—even Hans Zimmer relied on the company’s expertise for the impressive The Legend HZ, a souped-up Minimoog emulation. Synapse Audio’s latest effort, Proxima, is dedicated to the sound of the Sequential Circuits Prophet-600 from 1982 – at the time, the first synth with onboard MIDI.

More Information

According to Synapse Audio, the sound and character of the original have been precisely emulated at the component level. This includes the two oscillators as well as the classic Prophet lowpass filter. However, the developer has taken the liberty of making some additions to the filter section. Unlike the original, Proxima offers switchable filter slopes (12/24 dB/Oct) and an additional bandpass mode. The polyphony has also been doubled to 12 voices.

Moreover, the software synth offers several other enhancements over the original. In addition to the classic Poly Mod section, Synapse Audio Proxima comes with two dedicated LFOs. A 10-slot mod matrix offers plenty of flexibility for assigning modulation sources and destinations.

Proxima also contains a comprehensive arpeggiator and sequencer, which can also serve as a modulation source for up to five destinations. Furthermore, there’s an effects section with distortion, EQ, phaser, chorus, reverb, and delay. The software synth is MPE-compatible and supports microtuning and NKS.

Price and Compatibility

Synapse Audio Proxima is now available from Thomann* for $132 / £120 / €135. The software synth runs on macOS 10.14 or higher and Windows 7 SP1 or higher in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
