MiniMod Keyz

AJH Synth designs the MiniMod range of modules to recreate the circuits of the Moog Minimoog Model D in modular form. AJH worked with Cre8audio to assemble a custom version of the NiftyKeys modular keyboard. It was able to incorporate enough MiniMod modules to flesh out a fabulous standalone Model D replica.

The modules include three VCOs, two Shaped sine Sub bass generators, a 24dB vintage ladder filter, a High Pass filter, Dual Cascaded VCA, Dual Contour generators, Glide Noise module, Ring Modulator, Voltage Controlled LFO and finally there’s a multi-function LFO built into the NiftyKeyz.

As a controller keyboard, NiftyKeyz provides a full-size 49-key synth-action keybed with CV outputs for both velocity and aftertouch. It has four CV pitch and gate outputs, which can be used split, layered or polyphonically by alternating the outputs, or using it over MIDI. You’ll also find it has MIDI-to-CV conversion, so you could patch in your DAW via USB. An internal engine offers an arpeggiator, mod wheel CV and a multi-wave LFO. There are mults for CV and audio and audio outputs you can patch into.

It’s evidently a match made in heaven. The NiftyKeys is a superb solution for people wanting to bring the sense of a keyboard into their modular. The MiniMod modules will give you that authentic tone with loads of extra routing and modulation options the Model D never had.

Triple Cross with Tone Science

AJH Synth has teamed up in another collaboration with electronic musician, composer Ian Boddy. He’s behind the Tone Science series of modular records on the DiN ambient label.

The Triple Cross module features three independent crossfader and panner channels. They can be configured as a linear VCA, a two in, one out crossfader, a one in, two out panner or a two in, two out crossfader and reversing panner. There’s some normalisation going on to give you complex fading and spanning between four different sources to a single output. You can also push it into Ring Modulation with the help of audio rate modulation.

Ian says it was inspired by a complex patch he’d made on his vintage Serge modular. The Triple Cross brings this routing complexity to a single and undoubtedly much less complex module.
