With Spotify Messages, the popular music platform turns social, allowing you to share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks with your friends.
That’s right, Spotify has expanded its functionality, offering users a new way to enjoy the streaming platform with others. There is a strategy behind this new development, of course, as Spotify understands that “word of mouth” recommendations can play a big role in the short and long-term success of any media on the platform.

Naturally, this new change does not only benefit consumers but creators as well. Although we all browse music and content in our own ways, there are always moments when you want to share a song or podcast you’ve been enjoying with someone close to you.
This is certainly a change in direction for Spotify, because up until now, the app has always been running in the background while you cook, drive, or go to the gym. Now, users will be spending far more “hands-on” time on the app, which presents a new landscape of opportunity in terms of future feature development.
Messages will launch this week on mobile devices in certain parts of the globe for both Free and Premium users, provided they are 16 years up. For the most part, the same rules apply as with most social networks when it comes to sending users message requests and communicating with emojis.
Overall, Messages is a bold new step for Spotify, and we don’t know how users will take to it yet. Is Spotify destined to become just another social network centered around the premise of sharing and streaming content? Only time will tell.
