SolidGoldFX has a new compact modulated reverb generator, the Ether, that creates extensive ambient and shimmering sound worlds. Along with endless trails, the pedal is further manipulated by tap-tempo vibrato, tremolo and harmonic tremolo. Prepare to travel to a realm of deep, cave-like spaces.
The journey to the new SolidGoldFX Ether began with a simple question: What happens if you only manipulate the reverberation? What textures can be created by strong (or subtle) modulation of a cave-like room reverb, without touching the dry signal? The result is a powerful yet versatile reverb effect which can create some vividly beautiful soundscapes.
Ambient reverb with a twist
The pedal is a full-bodied ambient reverb with Decay, Color and Level controls, and an optional shimmer mode. And while most shimmer reverbs aim for an angelic effect, the SGFX development team preferred a slightly more twisted sound characteristic. So they developed an algorithm that tends to dissolve when it fades, and produces a sound that is “soaked in a dissonant veil caused by ether”.
Use the Decay control to go from a narrow space to infinite expanses. You use the Color control to make the sound as dark or as shrill as you like. With the extended area of the Level control, the reverb signal can overlay the dry signal, in case you are looking for particularly coloured effects. The Depth control contains sawtooth, sine and “special vibration forms”.
Now, let’s come to what really distinguishes this pedal from an ordinary reverb box: modulation. SolidGoldFX has equipped this compact stompbox with 3 different modulation types, each with 3 different LFO shapes and tap-tempo operation: Vibrato, Tremolo and Harmonic-Tremolo.
You can hear it in the sound examples from the video linked below. The Ether definitely transports you to another world. It has some really nice creative qualities and I can see it being a nice inspirational tool. Especially for ambience and textures.
