Novation Bass Station II

AKAI Professional MPC Key 37
The emergence of the AKAI MPC Key range was long overdue, as it was a concept that many had suggested for some time. And it was when AKAI reinvented the MPC line with powerful operating systems, capable of hosting plugins, that things started to move in that direction.
The MPC Key range is very much a workstation but one focused on groove and beatmakers, who can now bring their MPC workflow to a more traditional and capable platform. There’s no longer a need to fire up a computer, plug in a MIDI controller or power up a bunch of synths.
Everything you need is in the MPC Key but with a real focus on that classic MPC paradigm. The MPC Key 37 brings all of that into a small form factor, great for use on the road, on stage or in the studio. For many years, hip hop and RnB producers would work with a standalone MPC and a workstation, like the Motif or Trinity.

KORG Minilogue XD
In recent years, KORG have been the king (or queen) of small synths so it is no surprise that we’ve got two of them here! Before the dawn of their Raspberry Pi-based synths that have gone gangbusters, we had the ‘logues.
There was the monologue, which jumped on a resurgence of small, analogue synths led by, among others, Arturia’s MiniBrute synths. There were even prologue’s that occupied the polyphonic end of the market with a bigger keyboard.
But sitting sweetly in the middle of these was the minilogue XD. This was a blend of the best of both worlds, being 4-voice polyphonic, yet compact and with yet another great user interface design. It combined two analogue VCOs with a super-powerful third digital oscillator which includes KORG’s take on FM, their VPM engine.
The minilogue XD also has a superb FX section and a built-in polyphonic step sequencer for instant fun and gratification. It’s been around for some time, but it still manages to hit the sweet spot, and at just $544.00 / £485.00 / 569.00€ from our affiliate partner, it’s even sweeter!
KORG Modwave Mk.II
You genuinely couldn’t talk about small synths without including at least one of KORG’s latest line in small synths, the fantastic Pi-based range that includes the wavestate, opsix, multi/poly and the one we’ve featured here, the modwave Mk.II.
Each of the small synths in this family pays homage to either one of KORG’s legacy hardware synths or, in the case of the opsix, someone else’s synth! The wavestate is an evolution of the Wavestation, the opsix is a vastly more powerful take on a DX7, and the multi/poly is a fantastic expansion of KORG’s classic Mono/Poly.
The modwave is inspired by KORG’s DW-8000, a wavetable synth with analogue filters that many people still covet to this day. Well, KORG squeezed the very essence of a DW-8000 in the modwave and then spun their 21st-century know-how into it.
Stuffed to the gunnels with over 200 wavetables, you can even add your own creations and then process them through the multitude of modifiers, multi-lane Motion Sequencing and use the built-in Kaoss pad to move and morph through it all.
