Safari Audio Super Chunk: The Retro Bass Synth You’ll Actually Want to Use
Safari Audio Super Chunk delivers earth-shaking vintage-style bass sounds with a fun and intuitive user interface.
Safari Audio Super Chunk
Super Chunk is the second synth in Safari Audio’s new Superkeys series, after Cubby. While Cubby pays homage to the sounds of vintage home keyboards, Super Chunk is all about ‘70s-style analog bass synths. Unlike many other software synths, it isn’t an emulation of any particular vintage synth, although the user interface seems ever so slightly inspired by the Moog Grandmother.
Instead of a complex oscillator section, Super Chunk has a simple ‘Sounds’ menu with three knobs: Bite, Sub, and Chunk. Each of these three oscillators also comes with an octave switch. You can mix and match them to your liking.
For sound shaping, there’s a classic Moog-style ladder filter with drive, a ring modulator, and an effects section with vibrato, overdrive, a unique spring reverb, and a tone slider. Like any good monophonic bass synth, Super Chunk also offers a glide effect with adjustable glide time.
While this is a rather simple setup, all the important building blocks of analog bass sounds are there. And it’s the modulation section where things get interesting. Alongside an amp envelope, Super Chunk has two additional modulation envelopes that you can assign to various parameters by clicking on the ‘Geeky Glasses’ symbol. The same applies to the mod wheel. Several parameters can be modulated at the same time, so there’s enough flexibility for some surprisingly complex and unique bass sounds.
If you’re looking for a bass synth with the mojo of the vintage legends and a simple, fun user interface, Super Chunk should be right up your alley. Safari Audio has already said that this won’t be the last synth in the Superkeys series – we can’t wait to find out what will be next!
