Perfect Pads for Waldorf Protein by Harry van Mierloo
I have always been a sucker for wavetable synthesis, especially the early examples from the likes of PPG and their amazing Wave synth. Despite the PPG Wave being much more affordable than the likes of other digital behemoths of the day, it was still out of reach.
As such, on a limited budget, I sought out more affordable alternatives and rejoiced when Waldorf brought back the PPG and Waveterm in the form of PPG 2.V, which recently got updated to 3.V v2. Of course, Waldorf, the spiritual successors to PPG, have used wavetables in many of their products since.
Last year, they released the Protein, a small, desktop wavetable synth that took those crunchy, beautiful wavetables from the PPG and Microwave synths, crammed them into a little box and gave us a tiny powerhouse full of character and immediate sonic fun.
And at £295, I snapped a Protein up as soon as they landed on the shores of the U.K., and I truly love it! And now, Waldorf has released their first official paid-for soundbank entitled ‘Perfect Pads’. Quantum and Iridium owners may well know this name as its creator, Harry van Mierloo, has already created ‘Perfect Pads’ banks for their machines. Now he’s crammed it into a Protein!

‘Perfect Pads’ for Protein contains 32 gentle and sublime pad sounds that really take advantage of the Protein’s wavetable internals. When I loaded this up for the first time, I genuinely had to check that my controller wasn’t playing a bigger, more expensive synth by mistake.
If ambient and cinematic sounds are your thing, this bank is perfect for you. Its mood-inducing, relaxing, inspiring sounds will have you getting lost in waves of sheer bliss. It’s a truly divine collection and an absolute must-have for Protein owners.

Ocean Deep Mind for Behringer Deepmind by Ocean Swift
Behringer’s Deepmind was their first foray into hardware synthesizers and it took everyone by surprise. Inspired by the Roland JUNO-106, it laid out its stall with some intent. People were genuinely surprised by how good it sounded for a debut synth.
It even steered well clear of their later, obvious stylings that closely resemble the instruments on which they are based. But whatever you think about the company and its portfolio, there is no doubting that the Deepmind made a significant impact and laid the ground for what was to come.
And being based on the 106 architecture, a synth design that is almost impossible to make a bad sound with, the Deepmind definitely hit that sweet spot. And recently, the Deepmind got a refreshed look that far more closely resembles the 106. All three models, the 6, 12 and 12D got a fresh coat of paint and an ‘X’ added to their name.
Now our friends at Ocean Swift have put together 75 new presets for the Deepmind, entitled Ocean Deep Mind. Covering all the main styles, this bank contains polyphonic, monophonic sounds and sequences, perfect for the more ethereal and cinematic genres.

Bearing all the hallmarks of a great Ocean Swift sound bank, this ought to satisfy many Deepmind owners who will be pleased to see 3rd party sound designers still developing for this instrument. Grab it now for a limited deal of €14.99, down from €22.
Dystopian Frames for Kilohearts Phase Plant by Ilian
Phase Plant by Kilohearts is one of those ‘must-have’ synth plugins, no matter what kind of music you make. This semi-modular soft synth is a powerful and expressive instrument that combines different types of synthesis and effects in a truly modular way.
It’s deep, complex and yet easy to coax some truly original and inspiring sounds from. It works great with MPE too, which is a real bonus. Now, via Anton Anru, Ilian brings us ‘Dystopian Frames’, a collection of 50 dark and atmospheric sounds for this deep instrument.
There are 12 pads, 11 strings, 15 textures and 12 drones included in the package, all of which feature 8 macros to give you immediate control over numerous aspects of the synth engine with ease. The macros can also be automated in your Daw for powerful control over these parameters.

This is a really interesting bank of sounds. Just check out the video if you don’t believe me! You can buy the pack directly from the Anton Anru store for $19.95.
