More Than Music: A Touching End-of-Year Film from Thomann
At a time that increasingly feels like we’re about to drown in a sea of AI-generated content, fake realities, and social media doomscrolling, Europe’s biggest music retailer and its employees felt that we could all use a little reminder of how music can bring out the best in us humans. To highlight the unifying and sometimes life-changing power of music, Thomann has produced a touching short film just in time for the holiday season that’s sure to bring a warm and fuzzy feeling to your heart—and maybe even a tear to your eye.
More Than Music: The Power of Music Therapy and Human Interaction
Through three moving stories, ‘More Than Music’ shows the positive effects music and music therapy can have on premature babies, people with dementia, and people who suffer from depression. While the film ultimately conveys a positive and inspiring message, these are some big and serious topics. To ensure they got this right, Thomann teamed up with experts such as Dr. Susann Kobus, a music therapist at Essen University Hospital, the German Music Therapy Association, and Prof. Jörg Fachner of the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research at Anglia Ruskin University.
The first part of the film shows how music therapists use instruments like the Monochord* or Sansula* to provide comfort and reduce stress and anxiety in premature babies, to whom the world still feels far too big and life-threatening. In fact, plenty of scientific evidence proves that music can lower stress hormone levels and help people feel safer and more relaxed—and that applies to all of us, not just babies!
Coming from Thomann, ‘More Than Music’ is obviously ultimately a marketing film, but I think it has a unique human quality to it that can make us pause for a minute and remember what makes life worth living and, especially, what makes it so great to be a musician. It certainly did for me!
What do you think about the film? Have you experienced the therapeutic effects of music yourself? Let us know in the comments!
