Voltage Vibe’s Back2Front patching panels needed a hole to pass cables through the Eurorack and I provided one. How many cables can you squeeze through Molten’s Hole?

Molten’s Hole

It’s both hilarious and very very useful. It came about through some comments I made on Voltage Vibes Back2Front patch panel for the Matriarch. The idea is that it’s sometimes difficult to access the CV sockets on the back of something like the Matriarch and perhaps a solution would be to make a patch bay Eurorack modules to transplant all those sockets to the front by routing them to the back.

So, you plug a cable from the back of the Matriarch to the back of the patch bay module. But in order to do this you need to put the cables through some sort of gap. I thought this really needed was a properly made hole with a grommet to prevent cable snagging and to like nice. And so, Peter Anten from Voltage Vibes, inspired by my suggestion made a 1U hole and put my name on it. Behold – Molten’s Hole.

He also went on to design several other Back2Front panels. There’s a general-purpose one, one with scribble strips, one designed to accommodate the 4 voices of the Arturia KeyStep Pro and another that takes care of the KSP drums section. There are all sorts of ways these panels could be useful and all of them would require a Molten’s Hole or two. The holes might be useful for other things too, like passing a USB cable or expansion cable through your rack, or maybe for hiding away audio outputs without having to drill holes in the side of your case. The possibilities are endless.

I’ve made a video about how it all works below.

The Back2Front panels and Molten’s Hole are all available from the Voltage Vibes website. The panels cost from €12 to €56 depending on the size and how built you’d like them to be. Molten’s Hole is €8.06 for the kit or €12.09 built. And we thought it was amusing to release this on April the 1st and no, while it is undoubtedly funny for many reasons, it is not an April fool gag.
