The Modular Audio Tools MAT 16X8 is a no-frills compact audio interface that provides audio and MIDI I/O for your laptop- or tablet-based live rig.
The MAT 16×8 is the first offering from newcomer Modular Audio Tools, a German manufacturer founded in 2024 that seems focussed on providing solutions for live performers, electronic musicians, and producers on the go.

The MAT 16X8 is extremely compact and lightweight (only 135 g!) with eight stereo mini-jack line inputs and four stereo line outputs in the same format, which can of course be converted to standard TRS Jack connectors with a small converter cable (TPY 2003 KBB)* that costs around five bucks. For the MIDI I/O, Modular Audio Tools has opted against USB MIDI, because most setups already provide this.
Instead, there are two TRS mini-jack MIDI output channels (Type A) and an input that automatically switches to accommodate Type A or Type B devices. The I/O is logically laid out with the outputs on the left and the inputs on the right, with LED status indicators on each clearly labeled channel, which makes setting up quick and easy.
The MAT 16X8 can run at 24-bit 96 kHz, and while there are no mic preamps, the direct inputs have a signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB. The device is also bus-powered via USB and class compliant, so it will connect to any macOS, iPadOS, iOS, Android, or Linux-based system and run plug-and-play, while the manufacturer also provides ASIO drivers for Windows users.
In addition, there is a headphone preamp, and you have a cue bus with the ability to listen to channels 1/2 or 3/4. What’s more, the line outputs are DC-coupled, so there is some potential for CV control for Eurorack modular systems. Overall, the MAT 16X8 is a well-designed interface with quality components and features where they count.
