Only a few weeks after the 358 Enhancer, MIA Laboratories has released its next plug-in. The developer says that 980 SPARK is designed to “enrich and thicken” your tracks with a few easy adjustments. It consists of compressor, EQ and saturator stages, which have been stripped down to the bare minimum of controls. According to MIA Labs, the simple GUI is optimized for a quick workflow that still offers flexibility.

The compressor features an intensity knob, three time modes (fast, medium and slow) and adjustable make-up gain. The colour module is an EQ with six preset curves, which were “carefully developed”, MIA Laboratories says. There’s also an amount knob that lets you dial in how much EQ is applied. Finally, the signal reaches the saturation stage. This has six algorithms to choose from, and you can set it to soft, medium or hard. The drive knob controls the amount of saturation. According to the developer, the saturator uses 8x oversampling. The plug-in also offers overall input and output level controls and meters.

MIA Labs says that 980 SPARK is especially well suited for electronic music production and sound design, but also works well for acoustic instruments. As with all similar processors that use simplified controls for complex tasks, it’s going to be hit or miss: either it works for a particular track or instrument, or it doesn’t. During the creative phase of a production, it’s always good to keep things flowing, and that’s where quick and easy plug-ins like this one can be very helpful.
