Get Fender Tweed and Black Face-style tones with this new Magnatone Starlite 5-watt Class A combo. The low-wattage boutique amp looks great, and features a single 6V6 and 12AX7 tube to get you that vintage sound.
Based around a single 6V6 tube in the power section and a 12AX7 tube in the preamp, the new 5-watt Class A Starlite combo from boutique amp maker Magnatone aims to give you great Fender Tweed-style tones. It comes loaded with an 8″ Magnatone Custom Ceramic Magnet speaker, made by WGS in the USA, and has an 8-ohm speaker jack for connecting to an external cabinet.
Thankfully, you get a super simple control panel, which consists of a single Volume knob, and a Tone control that has been designed to get you classic Tweed and ’60s-era Fender Black Face-style tones. The tone control has a mid-cut that occurs just before the 12 o’clock position. You also get a negative feedback switch, which activates a negative feedback loop that, when engaged, will rein in the power amp gain.
Choose your sensitivity
This little combo also has two inputs with high sensitivity and low sensitivity, perfect for working with different output pickups. For example, the low input is great for both lower gain tones or if your guitar has hot pickups.
The Starlite combo comes in a lovely looking vintage brown finish with gold appointments. The dimensions are 17″ x 8″ x 12″, with a weight 19lbs/8.6kg. The amp ships with a cover and a 20-foot cable.
Pre-orders are now open with US dealers, and it appears to have a street price of USD 1299 there, which seems about right for an amp of this calibre. I’m really looking forward to hearing what this little combo can do as, on paper, it sound like a lot of fun.
RRP – USD 1299
