IK Multimedia Brown Sound Bundle: All 3 TONEX Collections in One Deal
Limited-time offer at Thomann: EVH-style tones for TONEX, complete and cheaper than buying separately
IK Multimedia is bundling all three TONEX Brown Sound Signature Collections into a limited-time deal: The IK Multimedia Brown Sound Bundle* combines Brown Sound 78/79, 80/81, and 82/84, covering the complete sonic evolution across six albums that reshaped rock guitar in the late ’70s and early ’80s. A total of 206 Tone Models, all based on the same modified Marshall amp clone, all compatible with every TONEX version. The bundle is only available until May 31, 2026.
All About the IK Multimedia Brown Sound Bundle
What Is the Brown Sound, Anyway?
Anyone with even a passing interest in rock guitar knows the term. The “brown sound” refers to the unmistakable guitar tone Eddie Van Halen established on his first albums: raw, aggressive, with a midrange punch that cuts through any mix and a dynamic response that conventional amp modeling struggled to reproduce convincingly for a long time. The name reportedly came from Van Halen himself, who described his sound during rehearsals with the word “brown.”
The foundation was a modified 1968 Marshall Super Lead, serial number 12301, with specific modifications that guitarists still debate and research to this day. IK Multimedia built their own version of exactly that amp for the Brown Sound series. The internal name is “The ONE,” and it forms the basis of all three collections in the bundle.
The Three Collections in the IK Multimedia Brown Sound Bundle
Brown Sound 78/79: Raw, Aggressive, Untamed
The first collection in the IK Multimedia Brown Sound Bundle features 50 Tone Models developed with period-correct gear and extensive research, with the goal of reproducing the raw, aggressive tone of the first two albums as authentically as possible.
IK factored in various speaker options, vintage pedals, voltage adjustments, and the original Vega wireless receiver that was part of the signal chain back then. If you’re wondering why details like that matter: they do. At this level of amp modeling, the small deviations are often what make the difference.
Brown Sound 80/81: Darker, Heavier, More Direct
The Brown Sound 80/81 collection reflects the guitarist’s tonal shift through the use of a different cabinet on the second album, as well as bypassing or swapping out specific effects. A new guitar also entered the picture, pushing the tone in new directions.
All of that is reflected in 73 Tone Models, including several amp-only captures. The tone on the 1980 recordings is drier, more uncompromising, and more saturated than on the debut. Midrange punch is front and center, the low end sits tighter. Anyone who knows this sound understands why it’s still used as a reference today.
Brown Sound 82/84: More Precise, More Polished, Stage-Ready
The third collection in the IK Multimedia Brown Sound Bundle focuses on the recording sessions from 1982 and 1984, offering 83 Tone Models, including several amp-only captures for pairing with impulse responses or running through a real cab on stage.
The production aesthetic of this era was different: radio-ready, brighter, more layered. Variac voltage, cab voicing, mic placement, and parallel load are the parameters varied across each Tone Model. All models are level-matched and captured raw without post-processing. The result: authentic studio tone references that slot straight into your signal chain.
Compatibility and Practical Use of the IK Multimedia Brown Sound Bundle
The bundle works with all TONEX versions: TONEX CS, TONEX App, TONEX Pedal, and TONEX ONE. Anyone already invested in the TONEX ecosystem can start using the collections immediately. The Tone Models are pure amp captures, meaning no room information is baked in. Time-based effects can be added afterward either within TONEX or via external pedals.
A practical note for live use: the amp-only captures from the 80/81 and 82/84 collections pair directly with cabinet simulators or a real cab on stage. If you want to switch flexibly between different IR combinations in a live context, this is a solid starting point.
For guitarists who aren’t necessarily Van Halen fans but want that Plexi high-gain character for rock and hard rock productions, it’s still worth a look. The Tone Models are a strong foundation for sounds in that territory, well beyond the direct stylistic reference.
Price and Availability
The IK Multimedia Brown Sound Bundle is exclusively available until May 31, 2026 at Thomann* for €115. The bundle includes all three collections as download licenses. The individual collection price was €99.99 each, making the bundle price significantly cheaper than buying separately. After May 31, 2026, the bundle will no longer be available.
