The Max For Live platform enjoys healthy development which extends Ableton Live’s already comprehensive features. On occasion, even awesome freebies like the Abyss reverb show up. Developed by Max for Cats and presented by Sonic Bloom, Abyss is a Halloween gift purpose-built for the kind of spine-chilling reverbations only an all-digital reverb can produce. If that sounds like your thing, read on…

What do all these buttons do?

They are obscure on purpose. But we have the guide. They control reverb parameters – Dry / Wet mix, Damping, Tail, Early Reflections, Modulation, Spread, Flange Delay and Delay Time. In addition to changing sound on the scale from 1 to creepy, they are visualized by a spiraling “mirror”. Among the parameters, you will also find different pitch algoritms, and a randomizer to mix up the parameters in the Dark Lord himself’s unholy whim. Oh, you will also find a Crow and a Cat – click to have them participate in the madness! Is this the first time the creatures of the night exist in a reverb? I’m not so sure, but as a servant of three domesticated felines, I’d love to get my cat reverb on. And crows are cool, too – maybe I should adopt one. I’ll name it Jim.

Cheat sheet for the Abyss

Hey, free reverb!

As an offbeat reverb generator, Abyss goes pretty far – and it’s completely free – apart from owning Ableton Live 10 with Max For Live, of course. Download from Sonic Bloom and keep an eye out for our weekly free plug-in roundups! These are never Ableton-only, just legit freebies by gracious developers looking to put their name out.
